Welcome to SynTax™ Converter 1.0. SynTax™ Converter is a conversion utility for
tax preparation programs to allow them to file with the IRS's electronic filing project.
This version only converts SoftView® MacInTax® at this time. Be sure to read Announce.
txt for elegibility to electronically file.
If you wish to convert a MacInTax® data file, run SynTax™ Converter and select OPEN
under the FILE menu. At the time of opening, SynTax™ Converter tests the MacInTax® data
file for inconsistancies and errors. If extra data is needed a worksheet is automatically
generated and provided. If the W-2 information is incomplete, SynTax™ Converter will
notify the user. If this happens, please select NEW from the FORM menu and select W-2
and fill out all the information.
When you have finished opening the MacInTax® data file, select NEW under the FORM
menu and select the 8453 U.S. Individual Income Tax Declaration for Electronic Filing.
Complete this form. If you are an individual (i.e. not a professional paid tax preparer)
be sure to check the self prepared box. If you are a paid preparer, use the SET PREPARER
INFO to set your EFIN (Electronic Filer Identification Number) and then add the suffix
to the DCN (document control number) at the top to the 8453.
After completing the 8453, select CREATE ELF... from under the SPECIAL menu. SynTax™
Converter will test the converted MacInTax® data file for appropriate paper indicators.
If you do not not comlete and elctronic filing work sheet in MacInTax® you will be asked
to select any paper documents (such as the W-2,W-2P, W-2G, or Physicians Statement)
that will be sent to the IRS (see below). Following this test, you will be shown a
standard file dialog indicating where you will save the converted file.
When you have completed these steps, be sure to sign the 8453 and attach any of the
required paper documents. If you are a paid professional preparer with an EFIN, follow
IRS Revenue Procedure and send the 8453 to the correct service center.
If you are a self preparer, attach all additional paper documents to the 8453 and
send it to AfterMath Customsoft, Inc. to be sent on to the IRS upon successful
transmission to the IRS.
Please read HowToELF.txt for information on how to send these files to the IRS.

SPECIFIC COMMAND INSTRUCTIONS
FILE
Open - Displays standard file dialog to get MacInTax file to open.
Displays standard put file dialog to get name and directory of
SynTax compatible file to be created (default name concats .sntx
suffix to MacInTax file name). The Open (File) command opens the
MacInTax file specified, reads in the text, closes the MacInTax
file, converts the text into SynTax resources, creates and opens
a SynTax file, and saves the resources to the new file. The
conversion routines will error trap for improper W-2s and will
alert the user to re-enter invalid W-2s. A dialog will be displayed
to collect the client names if no MacInTax electronic filing worksheet
is found.
Close - Closes the newly created SynTax file.
FORM
Add - Creates a new form (W-2 and 8453 only). Uses standard SynTax dialog.
Open - Opens a previously created form (either a form created with the Add
command above, or a W-2 converted from MacInTax can be opened).
Uses standard SynTax dialog.
Delete - Deletes a previously create form. Uses standard SynTax dialog.
SPECIAL
Set Preparer Info
- Displays dialog to collect preparer's name, address, ein, and
efin. This information is stored as resources in the application
file, so this command will probably need only be used once to
set the preparer's information. Once set, the information becomes
the default.
Create ELF
- Displays dialog to collect preparer's name and the paper document
indicators if there is no MacInTax electronic filing worksheet.
Uses standard put file dialog to create and open the electronic
filing document (the name of the file is pre-determined and connot
be modified by the user, the user merely chooses the directory and
volume to which the file is written). The naming convention is as
follows:
self-prepared returns : 'SP' + primary ssn,
paid preparer returns : 'EF' + efin + sequence + serial.
For paid preparer returns, the efin, sequence and serial numbers
are assigned on Form 8453 by the paid preparer, otherwise for self-
prepared returns, the checkbox signifying that the transmitter
did not prepare the return should be checked.
